The Aegean Wildlife Hospital (ALKIONI) has been providing professional care for injured and sick wild animals across Greece since 1995, with a particular focus on wild birds. Our role is to ensure that animals in need receive timely, humane, and care and, when possible, are returned safely to the wild.

This page explains how the campaign supports that work.

Our Work in Brief

Alkioni operates as a national reference point for wildlife rescue by:

• Receiving injured or exhausted wild animals from across Greece
• Providing medical treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term care
• Coordinating safe releases in suitable natural habitats

Over the past three decades, we have cared for more than 25,000 wildlife cases, working closely with citizens, environmental organizations, and public authorities.

At the start of 2026, over 300 birds are being hosted and in our care, with 50 of them already cared for and to be released.Needs are constantly increasing due to climate change, water shortages, especially during the summer months, and human activities, whether illegal, negligent, or ignorant. In 2026, more than 700 new cases are expected to require treatment – that is, almost two animals every day needing urgent help.

Why This Campaign Is Needed Now

Wildlife rescue is a long-term responsibility that depends on stable resources.
In recent years, Alkioni has experienced:

• Receiving an increasing number of emergency cases, particularly from island regions
• Facing rising costs for transportation, food, medication, and specialized diets for the animals in its care
• Needing to upgrade its facilities and equipment, always following and maintaining modern standards of care

The purpose of this crowdfunding campaign is to secure Alkioni’s operation in 2026 and to strengthen the Center’s capacity to respond effectively to wildlife emergencies. Reliable funding allows us to plan, respond, and maintain high standards of care.

Use of Funds

Funds raised through this campaign will be allocated to core operational needs, including:

• Emergency medical treatment and rehabilitation
• Species-specific nutrition and daily animal care
• Transport of animals from the Aegean islands and other parts of Greece to Paros
• Essential medical and rehabilitation equipment
• Preparation and execution of wildlife releases

All contributions are directed toward direct rescue and care activities.
